Starts next week.  Similar format to last year.

  • Things begin with the "Play-In" stage where the lowest seed teams from 4 of the 5 "main" regions battle against 8 teams from "emerging regions."  They are broken into 4 groups of three teams, will play a double round robin, the top two teams will be pitting randomly against each other:  #1s vs #2s in a Bo5.  The remaining 4 teams will advance to the group stage.
  • The "Group Stage" consists of 4 groups of four teams.  As of now each group has three of their teams, with the fourth to be determined from the Play-In.  No one group can have more than one team from the same region in it.
  • The top two teams from each group will be placed into a play-off bracket and this "Top 8" will begin Bo5 series until we crown our world champion.

The teams this year are:

PLAY IN GROUP A

  • EDG Edward Gaming (China | Third Seed | Favored to advance)
  • Infinity Esports (Latin America North)
  • Dire Wolves (Oceania)

PLAY IN GROUP B

  • G2 G2 ESports (EU LCS | Third Seed | Favored to advance)
  • Supermassive (Turkey)
  • Ascension Gaming (Southeast Asia - Thailand)

PLAY IN GROUP C

  • C9 Cloud 9 (NA LCS | Third Seed | Favored to advance)
  • Kabum Esports (CB LoL Brazil )
  • Detonation FocusMe  (Japan)

Play In Group D

  • G-Rex (LMS | Third Seed | Mostly Favored to Advance, but less sure)
  • Gambit Esports (CIS region - Russia)
  • Kaos Latin Gamers (Latin America South)

The #1 team from each of these group will play a best of 5 against a random #2 team from a different group.  Winner will advance to the Groups stage.

The Groups stage:

Group A:

  • Protected 1st Seed: Flash Wolves (LMS | 1st seed)
  • Afreeca Freecs (Korea | 3rd seed)
  • Phong Vu Buffolo (Vietnam | 1st seed | slot earned by playing well at MSI this year)
  • TBD (likely EDG, G2, or Cloud9)

Group B

  • Protected 1st Seed: Royal Never Give up aka RNG (China | 1st seed | Favored to win Worlds 2018 | MSI 2018 champion)
  • Gen.G (Korea | 2nd seed | Built from the ashes of Samsung so technically 2017 Worlds Defending Champions)
  • Vitality (EU LCS | 2nd seed)
  • TBD (Likely Cloud9 or G-Rex)

Group C

  • Protected 1st Seed: KT Rolster (Korea | 1st seed)
  • Mad Team (LMS | 2nd seed)
  • Team Liquid (NA LCS | 1st seed | Lost protected 1st seed for the region due to poor performance at MSI 2018)
  • TBD (Likely G2, EDG)

Group D

  • Protected 1st Seed:Fnatic (EU LCS | 1st seed)
  • 100 Thieves (NA LCS | 2nd seed)
  • Invictis Gaming (China | 2nd seed)
  • TBD (Likely G2, G-Rex)

The Play-In kicks off next week Monday.  To hear the analyst predictions on the whole event, here's a live edition of "The Dive" podcast.

Worlds Play-In Stage has begun and will continue all week long.  Here is the English live stream, and a VoD of Day 1 where Cloud9 had one match each against their group opponents.

Cloud 9 nearly gave me a heart attack when they faced the (not great looking) Gambit gaming in order to advance to the Group Stage of Worlds.  This series went to 5 games, despite the first game of the series looking very powerful for them.

This game 5 victory felt like a pressure valve releasing.  Cloud 9 has been NA's best performing team at Worlds for years now, and if we'd lost them at the Play-Ins it would be a concerning end.

I haven't watched any of the other Play-In knockout series yet, but the result of Play Ins was the following four teams advanced:

  • Edward Gaming
  • Cloud 9
  • G-Rex
  • G2

So in other words, still the same four teams we thought (the last seeds from four major regions).

The teams were then drawn and we have our final Groups

Group A:

  • Flash Wolves: 1st Seed LMS
  • Afreeca Freecs: 3rd Seed Korea
  • Phong Vu Buffolo:Vietnam
  • G2 Gaming: 3rd Seed EU - from Play Ins

Group B:

  • Royal Never Give Up: 1st seed China (LPL)
  • Gen G: 2nd Seed Korea
  • Team Vitality: 2nd seed EU
  • Cloud 9: 3rd Seed NA - Qualified from Play Ins

Group C:

  • KT Roolster: 1st Seed Korea
  • Mad Team: 2nd seed LMS
  • Team Liquid: 1st seed NA
  • Edward Gaming: 3rd Seed LPL

Group D:

  • Fnatic: 1st seed EU
  • 100 Thieves: 2nd seed NA
  • Invictus Gaming: 2nd seed LPL
  • G-Rex: 2nd seed LMS - Qualified from Play-Ins

So congratulations to Cloud 9 for making it into Groups.  Too bad you got drawn into the Group of Death... :(

I expected this match to be a sleeper, but I think EDG disrespected MAD Team too much, and thus this game matched turned into an exciting one!

Also, turn into this other Day 2 game where G2 eSports show off you CAN play HEIMERDINGER @ WORLDS

I can't believe I'm writing this guys but... watch this game from Gen.G, Korean 3rd seed and Defending World Champions, against Eu 2nd seed, Vitality.  EU is 2-0 against Korea in DAY ONE

This is an EXCITING 40+ minute showdown between EU's Vitality gaming and NA's Cloud9 from Day 2 of groups.  Vitality's aggressive gameplay took down defending World Champions yesterday, and Cloud9 fell to this year's MSI champions, this seemed like a certain favor for the EU team.

It was messy, but I'm so glad NA got it's first win at Worlds 2018 Groups.

(Hey, so I'm WAY behind on Worlds Coverage.  I know that if you were to look you could see results to entire groups at this point, but please refrain from posting those results yet.  Thanks!)

In the other side of the same group,  Royal Never Give up, China's #1 seed, MSI Champions, continued their march to making it look like them wining worlds was a sure thing by rolling over the defending World Champions.

Day 3 of Groups was a mixed bag.  Team Liquid continued to disappoint against Edward Gaming,  but 100Thieves put up an unexpected win against LMS's G-Rex.  Cloud9 gave a decent showing against the defending world champions, but ultimate fell to them.

I'm becoming increasingly anxious that NA is going to do as bad at Worlds this year as years past.  C9 might still make it out, but TL and 100T both look awful overall (except in in 100T's win obviously)

Groups Day 4:  TIL that Captain Flowers and Vedius make a hilarious casting combo.

This first match I'm linking because of their playing off the fact that Afreeca Freecs's jungler is named "Mowgli" and they have fun with it, putting them in the mood for bad jokes and puns the rest of the game.

The second match had an explosive finish from G2, giving up a baron for the god damned NEXUS.  Eyes on the prize.

FNC then went on to have a KILL-TACULAR game against G-REX that was exciting to watch.

Then TL Finally got their first win of Worlds 2018 against Mad Team

Group Stage Day 5 was the finale of Group B and WHAT A DAY.

I'm still working my way through it so check back on this post for more, but the game opens with EU and NA SHOWING THE HELL UP against the UNDEFEATED RNG and the defending Champions Gen.G!

EDIT UPDATE: What he hell!  With Vitality's second win over Gen.G, the DEFENDING WORLD CHAMPIONS ARE ELIMINATED FROM WORLDS?!?!?!?

EDIT UPDATE: AND THEN CLOUD9 Beat RNG?!?!  There's now a 3 way tie for FIRST?!?!  THIS DAY!

EDIT UPDATE: And Cloud9 and Vit finally meet and in an exciting clash, Cloud9 make the win, securing themselves a spot in top 8.  Now it's up to RNG and Gen.G.  Though dead, if Gen.G beat RNG, then C9 advances #1 in group and RNG and VIT will tie break.  If RNG wins, then C9 and RNG will tie-break for the #1 spot! THIS DAY.

EDIT UPDATE: RNG ran over Gen.G, leading to a tie-breaker against Coud9 for #1.  Cloud9 and RNG traded blows evenly the entire game, but at the very end they made a bad fight for baron, and RNG were able to use the ace to take the game.  While Cloud9 leaves the group #2, this is the STRONGEST LOOKING they have ever been at Worlds.

I'm adding to this post the Twitch Stream of the ENTIRE DAY.  This is my favorite day of Worlds 2018 so far.   What amazing upsets, what great games!

Like your games with 40+ kills?  How about this back and forth kill fest between G2 eSports and Flash Wolves as their group continues on Day 6.  Group A is turning pretty chaotic.
