So due to the renaming of a few things I've decided to name this topic just "LoL Season 2019 Spring."  The reason for this is because there is no longer an NA & EU League of Legends Championship Series.  Riot has released the EU LCS to a third party to operate and produce, advertise, and franchise, and that third party as renamed their league "League of Legends European Championships" or "LEC" resulting in the North American series to be the sole holder of the "LCS" name so they are now just "the LCS."  This also lets me post matches for not just NA or EU, but any regional spring split game of interest.

In any case, season 2019 is off to the races.  Most leagues had their first week last week but the LCS kicked off this week.  I was running D&D at the time so I missed these live but I am only just now starting to watch the first match of the day, where currently two-time LCS champions Team Liquid faced off against Worlds Semi-Finalists Cloud9, and already it's got me hollering.

Here is a VoD of that match.  If you want to watch the whole day of LCS, here's the Twitch VoD.

Of note for this match up:

  • Team Liquid made two huge acquisitions in the off season:  Jensen for their midlane and 2017 world champion (and former NA support before then) CoreJJ as their new support.
  • Those of you paying attention will notice that means Cloud9 lost their star midlaner of years, Jensen to team Liquid.  This change came so late that they were forced to scramble for a replacement and ended up with Nisqy, who played in EU on Splyce most recently.  Not a bad player, but is he Jensen levels?
  • Aside from losing Jensen the rest of C9 Semi-final run team is here, so this is as good of any test for Team Liquid's new roster (even though they already have a sterling record against C9 in playoffs).

Team to watch after Week 1 - the unexpectedly 2-0 Clutch Gaming.  Both games are interesting bouts.  TSM Fans can still enjoy their new top laner getting to go NUTS on Huni in top-lane despite the unfavorable final outcome.

Week 2 of LCS opened with this GREAT game of Echo Fox vs TSM!  I'm slowly becoming a Solo fan while Bjersen continues to be the difference maker on his own team.

Week 3, Cloud9 had two great games

The first was the first North American Sylas where Licorice was forced into picking it before he had a lot of experience, but by the end he showed off just how powerful being able to steal any of the enemy's playmaking ults can be.

Their second game I highlight less because it was close (it wasn't) but because Cloud9 drafted a very specific comp with a very specific goal, and (aside from one fight) executed it magically. Plus a sign of just how strong Ezreal is right now.

To my surprise this throwdown between (currently) last place Golden Guardians and a middle-of-the-pack TSM turned out to be quite a drag-out good game with solid (and stupid) moments by both teams.

It feels like Season 1 & 2 with all the Karthus lasers again...  maybe TSM shoulda brought Soraka lol

First game of week 5 was an exciting match between 100 Thieves (3-5) and Optic (2-6).

Lots of stuff I wanted to share but was too busy to do so.

First up:  TSM is the first team in LCS to deliver Team Liquid a loss this year.  Here's their game, showing Team Liquid can bleed, but since TL hasn't lost a game again, so time will tell if this was TSM's win, or TL under-estimating them.

Second Up: FlyQuest is quickly becoming one of my surprise favorite teams this split, in no small part because their rookie top-laner, V1Per, has brusted out his famous Riven, bringing a hold up to the Tank Meta to bring back top lane carries again. Here's V1per's two pop-off top-lane games.

Finally: This is just for fun, but due to some off-screen schenanegans, caster Riot Kobe was forced to cast this week's match between TSM and FlyQuest after eating hot sauce.  Enjoy his suffering.

LCS Spring Playoffs kicked off this past weekend.  First quarterfinal was FlyQuest 4th seed vs Golden Guardians 5th seed.  This was the first time GGS showed up to playoffs since the organization's founding last year, and they had 2 10th place splits last year.  This ended up being a long, back and forth series.  The best game of it was game4, which I will attach below.

2019 Spring Playoffs Semi-finals pit Cloud 9 as 2nd seed vs 3rd seed TSM.  TSM won convincingly against Echo Fox 3-1 in the previous series to arrive at Cloud9.

Those of you who enjoy long series with fun picks and an intense final game should give this a watch.  Game 1 has the most interesting pick with a double support bot-lane that doesn't do great at first but offers insane durability into the late game.  The final game offers an intense stand off between both teams where victory was not assured until the last teamfight.

LCS Spring Split finals.  TSM (3rd seed) vs Team Liquid (1st seed) in Saint Louis.  Best of 5.

5 games.  Back and forth.  Both teams have high quality games.  Another Sona + Taric victory in game 2.  Ultimately however Team Liquid took the series after a grueling series. With this win:

  • Doublelift surpasses Bjersen with 6 total LCS titles over Bjer's 5
  • Xmithe gains his 5th LCS title to tie Bjer
  • Team Liquid is the 2nd team in LCS history to win 3 split titles in a row.  The only other org to do that is TSM.  This means TL now has more TOTAL titles than either Cloud9 or Counter Logic Gaming.
  • Jensen, after all these years has finally won a best of 5 against Bjersen, and Jensen gains his FIRST LCS title.
  • CoreJJ took his first LCS title.  He also was spring split MVP (as support!) and overcame the "MVP Curse" of still winning the title despite earning that award.

If you watch one game of this, watch game 5, but I DO think game 2 is another great example of how SCARY the Sona+Taric pick is when it works right.
