So I beat this tonight.  Here's the short and sweet:

  • Most fun I've had with a Sonic Game since Sonic Adventure 2.
  • Best reproduction of classic Sonic controls and mechanics since the Sega Genesis.
  • Overall tight level design, with a few aggravating exceptions.
  • Music and overall sound design is awesome.
  • Self-referential humor was great.  No really game picks on the Sonic franchise lowest points, and covers such wonderful mysteries as "Where does Sonic keep his rings?"
  • With the exception of one, the boss fights were imaginative and well done and most importantly fun.
  • Biggest flaw: Game is too short, had it beat in 5 hours.  Yeah there's a lot of stuff left to do in terms of challenges and what not, but the story is complete, and for many people that's all they will count on.
  • Recommendation: If you were ever a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog and have been staying away from the recent stuff because they have been declared bad on arrival, this is the game you should pick up to come back to.
  • Kinda makes me want to pick up Sonic Colors, hell even Sonic Unleashed if I can find it bargain bin.  Does make me very glad I missed out on Sonic The Hedgehog (2006).
  • Funny trend - how much I enjoyed the level from a given stage in Generations seemed to stem directly to how much I liked the game it was from, or respected the game it was from.  Naturally the stage from Sonic(2006) was the worst, and the one from Sonic3 & Knuckles was one of the best.

On a quick note to the "Oh but they had to mine their old classics for it to be good" criticism: No.  Sega already released a game that did that and it was called Sonic 4: Episode 1.  Sonic 4 is a WASTE OF YOUR MONEY.  It claims to be a whole new Sonic adventure but really, it's amateur level designers and poor game engine programers reusing ideas from Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 in a copy paste effort to make a cash in.

Sonic Generations on the other hand may use the themes, music, and concepts (and in some places set pieces) of classic Sonic levels (like Chemical Plant from Sonic 2), but the actual layouts and paths through these levels are 90% new or more.  This holds true for playing classic Genesis-era levels in 3D or modern-era levels in 2D:  Each create completely new levels off favorite themes.  Is it truly new then - no but the game sells itself as a 20th Anniversary game so I forgive it.  It's not like Sonic4 - which claimed to be new, but was lying.

Anyway that's my thoughts.  Glad I bought it on PC for $30 instead of $50 for the consoles cause I might feel a little more burned on the length at $49.99.    Overall though fun game - gets my approval.

As an FYI: I recently began suffereing control issues I was not having before on the PC version of this game.  I might recommend to you that if you are planning on getting this, getting it for console might save you some "Why aren't you working controller drivers" frustrations.

With the holiday discounts this game is now $22.50~....which is a 100% acceptable price for me to buy the game at. I'm probably gonna wait another week or so - on the off -chance it becomes even more reduced price- before buying it.

Additionally, for $100, the entire Sega Collection is decidedly a bargain. Between all the old Sonic games, Vectorman, Ecco the Dolphin -- each of which I've paid $10 or more for at some point or the other. But I just dont see myself spending that kind of money; especially not since I haven't touched the ROMs of those games in ages.

So for those of you who don't know - I did eventually buy this [[$10 -- Steam you have outdone yourself again!!!]].

Thusfar having a lot of fun, and - partially to test out Fraps+WindowsMovieMaker, partially because I love the stage so much - I recorded a run of Level 2: Chemical Plant Zone, Act 2 and Act 1.

It's up now, so enjoy :).

So I've begun doing a "Speed Demon" thing with my favorite levels in a bid to get unreasonably good times in lots of the levels. As of now:

Green Hill Zone Act I: 1:00.51!
Chemical Plant Zone Act I: 1:04.54 <-- this one I should be able to easily shave another second or so off of.

I'm probably not gonna do them all in order, since that would mean having to play levels I didn't enjoy as much pretty intensely. But I'm definitely planning on messing around in Crisis City some more since the level is just too cool, but not as enjoyable until you start doing kinda good at it.

If there's any interest in recordings of these, let me know.

Speed Demon run for Crisis City Act2 --> 2:22.66 I'm not quite satisfied with this run though, as I made a lot of minor mistakes in the first half and only recovered the time towards the end. When I'm up to it, I'm gonna try to get this down to 2:15.00 on the same route...but that'll take a lot of time.

Also - managed to repeat it with a ~2:23 run on the online leaderboard. . . 90something'th place. :)!

EDIT: 2:17.03. But got hit in that last segment with the cars and boulders and lost 2-3s there, so I still believe 2:15 is possible on this route.
