I'm sure the links have gone out, but to those who possibly haven't checked your emails, you should be able to download the client now.  And it takes a while.  So do it before Friday.

They had a link in one of the first posts in the News forum.  However, shortly after I began downloading, the forums borked completely, so mayhaps that will be fixed later today.

.............also it appears I forgot about turning off the computers this morning (they were downloading all last night).  Oops.

EDIT: Also congrats on finding a place!

EDIT #2: Appears the forums might be back up.  Wasn't kidding about it taking a long time to download -- 15 GB at least is what you'll be looking at for the GW2 files.  I have 4-5 GB of data for the SEVEN YEARS of GW1 that I've played. Buh.

Okay sorry for the double post, but this is SUPER IMPORTANT FOR THE BETA Weekend.

Arena.net posted about how servers are going to work during the beta and after launch.  Here's the deal kids - when you login to Guild Wars 2 for the first time you are assigned a "Home World" or "Server."  In the future, you'll be able to play with friends on other servers at no charge through "guesting," but this feature won't be available during the beta so we need to choose and coordinate on a server ahead of time if we are going to play together.  We need to get this right because we will be given 2,000 free gems during the beta and due to the delay on transfers of Home World you'll really only be able to do it ONCE during the beta, so we gotta get this right first try.

Which really sucks because we won't know which servers won't be available or overpopulation until the beta actually starts.  sigh

Okay so here's the list of US servers from the post above:

  • Anvil Rock
  • Borlis Pass
  • Yak’s Bend
  • Henge of Denravi
  • Maguuma
  • Sorrow’s Furnace
  • Kaineng
  • Jade Quarry
  • Fort Aspenwood
  • Ehmry Bay
  • Ferguson’s Crossing
  • Darkhaven
  • Vasburg
  • Eredon Terrace
  • Crystal Desert
  • Tarnished Coast
  • Steamspur Mountains
  • Blazeridge Mountains
  • Isle of Janthir
  • Sea of Sorrows
  • Deldrimor
  • Scavenger’s Causeway
  • Moladune
  • Eternal Grove

I feel like whoever gets into the beta first on Friday should take a peak at the server population levels.  Unless the server says "High" or "Full/Unavailable" grab the first server on the below list.  If it is that, grab the second server.  Once you've grabbed the server post here at let us all know.

  1. Deldrimor
  2. Kaineng
  3. Crystal Desert
  4. Sorrow's Furnace

I'm basing this entirely off of name.  Keep in mind there's no PvE vs PvP server thingy in this game, nor RP vs not, so all that matters is we end up in the same place.

As an aside holy FUCK is it ugly that they expect us to pick a server once, get it right, and then pay them real money to switch if we're unhappy about it.  I mean yeah I guess it kinda makes sense because we're not paying a subscription to maintain those servers, but as veteran of a bunch of MMOs where you can bounce servers all the time to test them out, this tastes really really bad.  Like FF11 bad, although at least here you aren't being forced to a random server like you were there.

Well except it's gems so you don't need to use real world money, just buy the gems with your coin. Not knowing what exchange rate is though, yeah, it's still probably a fair amount so the more attractive option is just to buy with money.

I find it lame that all characters are stuck on a realm. I get they don't want people just hoping servers for WvW to the most successful one but I figured with limited character slots this would be a limited problem. Not many folks will delete a perfectly good character after reaching max level with all your gear just to swap to another server cause your character slots are full. I'm fine with dealing with it on a beta weekend but real world it does suck.

Additionally, I feel like this presents a similar problem to other MMOs and occured with WoW on separating people on servers. While it's no where as annoying cause you can still "guest" to other servers, this still produces a problem. What if you met a few friends on another server? You want to play with them but you also want them to play with your friends. How easy is it to "guest"? Do I now have to choose between guesting to my new friends server while leaving behind my other friends? What if their server is really cool? Now we get to play the choosing game of servers with different groups of friends, which becomes a real big problem if you're into WvW and so are both groups of friends. You are nowhere near as screwed as you are with WoW or other similar MMO's since you can still play but it does present a problem if this guesting mode has stupid restrictions. I am really not happy with this.

On a brighter note, I'm loaded and ready to go! Didn't really have any issue getting the program or the downloader. Just left it on over night. Launched the login screen and sat there giddy like a school girl for a moment before coming to work.

Maybe they'll change it later, especially if there's an outcry from the community?  I don't know how they've handled servers and the like in any of their other games (like Aion) -- was it similar to what they're doing here?

No.  Not at all.

Basically in any MMO with servers when you login for the first time you can choose any server from the list to roll on so long as it isn't down or locked for some reason.  Then you can roll a fixed number of characters per server (in WoW I think it was 8 or 10).  However any time you are looking at your character select screen you could hit "server select" select a different server, and create another 8 to 10 characters on that server too.  This was permitted until you hit some account character limit (for Aion I think it was as small as 8 whereas with WoW I wanna say it was 50).  Doing this did not cost you extra money, in game or otherwise, you could just do it.

Now there are a few things to consider here given Guild Wars 2.  First and foremost, WoW and it's ilk are subscription games.  It is very common for Free to Play/Subscription less MMOs to currently limit the number of characters you can roll.  They normally do this by limiting you to one or two a server (in the case of Star Trek Online it's one or two PEROID).  That subscription fee pays for, among other things, maintaining these servers and all the characters on them, so I understand why GW2, lacking a subscription, would want to place limits of some kinds.  I also understand that given the nature that PvP is Server vs Server, that they'd want to have players feel attached to the sever they are on, and forcing them to stick with it is one way to do it.

However, we veterans of WoW and it's ilk know full well that playing on the right server is a gamble, one you don't always get right the first time.  Part of what is nice about the way this works in other MMOs is that if for some reason you get sick of your current server, you can roll on a new sever just to see what it's like.  If you like the community in that server more, you can pay Blizzard money to transfer your main character(s) to that server.  Or you can also start over from level 1, if you weren't too far in.  As a point of example,  by the time I had my first level 60 character in WoW i had bounced servers no less than 3 times trying to find a home.  As it stood, at time of quitting, I played equal parts across two servers.  I know some people did across 3.

What's nice is that the biggest reason for server to isolate people in an MMO is server type.  Specifically if a server is PvP (free ganking) or not (sometimes if a server is RP or not as well).  The nature of GW2 is that server type isn't an issue anymore, so we don't have a real reason to argue over what type of server we want to end up on.  We also don't have factions to worry about, so all things considered this is still easier to co-ordinate than it would be with another MMO (say like how SWTOR was).  Still, it's really easy for those of us used to being able to do that, being told we have to get our server choice right on the FIRST TRY or else we have to pay Arena.net real money is something that understandably makes those of us used to this sorta thing uncomfortable.

Generally you pick a server and then you have a list of characters you play on that server. It was a giant problem (still is) when you level a main on a server different then some groups of your friends. I would say GW2 handles them differently and similarly at the same time. Difference being regardless of server I can still guest to friends servers.

I'm merely taking the worst case scenario and pointing out all the problems this causes. Really, best case scenario is that "guesting" is super fucking easy and the only real hinderance is that you can't WvW on different server. I'm just skeptical when they say "guesting" will have restrictions.

So looking at the LOW population servers, I'm going to choose the following server (the ones on the list Vergil posted are either Medium or High):

     ---  Moledune  ---
