So I ran across someone talking about this game in reddit after mentioning the game ARMA II was a top selling game on Steam. The reason was cause of the mod DayZ. Apparently this sounds like a mod that takes the game and puts you in a giant persistent world filled with zombies and other players and you must survive against zombies and other players while also trying to survive yourself by keeping yourself healthy. Sounds like basic survival is also important as you must find food to survive and such things like bleeding needs normal medical attention. Basically, this sounds like a true "survival horror" game.

To me, on paper, this sounds like an incredibly interesting mod to a game I probably wouldn't care about normally. However it also sounds like something I could get frustrated with if some of the details aren't done right. I'm curious if anyone has tried this or if you've heard of other friends trying this and what their opinions are on it. I'm not really gonna go and buy a $30 game just for a mod but if it ever appeared on sale for dead cheap and this mod really is pretty fun I might pick it up. So... yeah, anyone try this thing or know of impressions on it?

EDIT: The site doesn't seem to make it clear whether you need to get the base game or base game plus it's expansion. Some guides make mention of both.

EDIT 2: Okay apparently you'd need to get "Combined Operations" which is just the base game plus the expansion bundled together which is $30 on steam.

I found someone doing essentially what is a Let's Play of the DayZ mod. Definitely interesting! Check it out here.

I guess DayZ is now officially getting a stand alone release. Thought I had heard rumor about this during the Steam sale so I backed off from getting Arma 2 (not to mention it's lame discount in comparision to other games). I'm sure Arma 2 is great but I'm kinda personally only interested in the DayZ mod. A stand alone version should be pretty great and I'm all for them going the Minecraft model of pay early for alpha and get updates along the way. I don't really play Minecraft anymore but I never regretted purchasing it early. Should be interesting!

If this goes stand alone, I'm sold.

Huh; I knew this sounded familiar.

The core ideas you've described were detailed a LONG time ago by this guy. In specific - a persistent MMO world where players were forced to cooperate vs an ineffable zombie horde and mere survival was in and of itself a significant achievement. Death integrated into the game as something anticipated.

That said, I don't know enough about DayZ to draw any further comparisons. And if character profiles are consistent from play session to play-session, than the core of what this "Communist Zombie MUD" idea was getting at would be lost. Either case, always cool when that kind of thing happens
