So I've been trying to come up with a design for my new goalie helmet for a bit. I have my new helmet but coming up with an idea of what to paint on there took me a bit. While I know that none of you are huge hockey people, I do know you all love games. I've tried to stick to a Legend of Zelda theme on the helmet and was hoping to see what you guys think before I go and ask for it to get painted. Images aren't exact on how it'd show up, what with bumps and curves on the helmet and the fact that I'm attempting to put 2d images on what's supposed to be a 3d object, but it gives you a decent idea of what'd look like. Behold my crappy photoshopping (really GIMP) skills!

Right now the only thing I'm not positive on is the back of the helmet (upper right image). The black stripes are where the straps hold onto the back so it's a tad hard to put anything there (back straps weren't in original image so had to dump some paint in there). I'm not sure I like the ocarina and Majora's Mask there since they look a tad random but figured I'd leave them there to see what others think and to show you what could be there.

So yes, do you think this would look cool on my goalie helmet or is it dumb? Should I totally just put a giant glass of beer or something on there instead? I'm looking for feedback! I want this to look good as I probably will not get another paint job on a helmet for quite some time (they're a tad expensive). I've gotten a little bit of feedback and will probably throw another mockup soonish to get more opinions.

I think lose the Orcaria and the Majora's Mask.  They do seem rather random.

I honesty don't know about the Link figures either -- I have no idea how that would transfer over onto curves. I love the Triforce and the wings around the face.

I dunno.  I like asymmetry in some ways.  Maybe Link on the left and the Master Sword crossed with Hylian shield on the right?  Or Sword on one side shield on the other?  I suppose shield would thematically go better for you on the left side since that's your glove had and the sword would be the stick on the right side, but that would be opposite of Link since he's a lefty.

Long and short, I love the front middle, not the back, and I don't know about Link's ability to transfer onto the curved surface.

If bananas have potassium, do potatoes have banassium? 6th graders are like sentient balloons. Drifting in any direction, at any speed when given any provocation.

I don't know about Link's ability to transfer onto the curved surface.

I generally trust the artist's ability to make an image appear good on the curved surfaces. Goalie helmets generally have people or characters appear on the side there (some random NHL helmet examples). Honestly I think I may have just put him up too high and he'd appear more just on the side where it's more flat than as high up as he would as the Triforce would cover more of the top. It's kinda hard to gauge how to put the Triforce on the top from the side image so I think I just screwed that up. I asked some others in vent and I do hear putting the Hylian shield on there from them as well so I might try and stick it on there somehow. The only issue I have with putting more different complex images on there is that it starts to bring up the price. Honestly I'm more concerned with it looking cool than the price point but if I can get a cool design with as simple or few images as possible it's a bonus.

Colleen thought up a good idea where perhaps for the back I could make it just black and put some elements from the original Zelda menu screen on there, like maybe put the 'B' and 'A' where the ocarina and mask are and put a life meter on the bottom middle underneath the strap. Fairly simple and I think it'd look kinda neat.

EDIT: Oh I just realized one of my NHL helmet examples has a backplate that's more open for an image. To avoid confusion it should be noted that the back of my helmet does not have the straps like that, it is like it is in my mockup image with straps across the outside. I could probably adjust my straps to be more like that but honestly I don't like how that'd feel on the back of my head.

After seeing those example helmets, yeah, the Link should look good on the sides.

I like Colleen's idea for the menu stuff -- maybe hearts along the bottom and the D-pad on the left and A/B buttons on the right?

Maybe put a boomerang in the B window and a bomb in the A?  <_<  Careful you don't find a secret passage on the back of your head though.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I have 3 other quick shops I came up with from feedback. First, I redid the back to Shieke's idea and I also moved the images a bit to better fit Link on the flat side of the helmet which is the more likely the way it'd be done. I personally really like this.

This next one contains the image recaling and some ideas I got from Misharum. Mish, I know you suggested sticking the eagle crest on the back but it just didn't work. The straps just cover too much up and all that showed up really was the wings. I ran with your idea of the trifoce on bottom and hylian shield on top though.

I kinda like this idea, primarily I'm a fan of the triforce on the bottom. I can't get the shield on the helmet in a "correct" fashion since, again, I'm working with 2d images that'd be wrapped around a 3d object, so the shield looks kinda "flat" here but it gives a decent idea of what it'd be like.

This third one I ran with Nate's idea of sticking the shield and/or master sword.

Again, kinda like this idea. I think I like the symmetry of Link on both sides more though. I fiddled with the sword on the right but that looked too empty and I'm not really a fan of the helmet without Link on it in some fashion. Where the sword is right now is basically the best place I could find for it. The shield and sword look nice but I'm not sure it looks good with everything else (it looks too... busy or something to me). I'm sure there's a way to make it work but can't figure it out at the moment.

I think I like my original idea best with Shieke's back plate idea. The crest looks neat wrapped along the neck line and I like the prominently shown triforce on top. The triforce would look nice on the bottom but then I have no idea what to stick on top (besides the shield that I showed above), maybe Link? But then I'm not sure what'd go on the sides (maybe the shield then...). I could try that idea later as it is late now. One thing I really wanted to do was put Zelda somewhere on the mask. However to match Link I wanted her in some sort of action pose, most likely with her bow and arrow, but trying to find a good source image that would be "official" art or close enough proved hard to find and ones that I did find didn't really transfer that well to the mask. If I could find a good one I'd try it.

Anyways, any other feed back would be great!

I do like the top version you have there.  The one with the shield on top and the triforce on the bottom also looks neat, but I can understand possible trepidation at it.  Will keep an eye out for Zelda art.

EDIT: Alternatively you could include such beloved characters as Navi, Tingle, and Midna!

Joking aside, some of the high res pics of her in Smash Bros. Brawl look like you might be able to work with them?  Haven't found any of what I would imagine would be a large enough size though....

For Action-Zelda poses I'm gonna 2nd what St00f said; odds are good you could find (or make) a really good shot from SSBM / Brawl.
I'd do it myself if I was at my computer (ah the joy of emulation).

Stuff like this:

I can only imagine if you took the time and energy in-game to line up the camera angle/zoom just right you could really get something fantastic.

At some point I want to make the time to give some dedicated feedback to this, but the one thing that keeps coming to mind to me with each of these iterations is sometimes less is more.  I feel like there's too much emphasis being put on slamming as many Zelda images onto this thing as possible as opposed to focusing on a single, iconic, Zelda image.  For example, the first design had elements of of the Hylian shield, plus Twlight Princess era Link art, plus OoT era art, and none of it really meshed well together to me.

When I do searches for "bad ass goalie masks" I get a lot of stuff like this:

Now granted I also see some pertty busy stuff too like this (which I guess was MSU Olympic player Ryan Miller's):

Still, were it me, I would choose either to go with the hylian shield OR a specific Zelda character, and model the mask around it.  Make the goalie mask the literal Majora's Mask, for example, or put a big Link face on the top, or go with a gold + red classic scheme from the old Zelda 1 carts etc etc.

"Less is more" is always good! If I could go with a single item design like the skull mask or Iron Man mask that'd be cool. The Hylian Shield mask I linked to in the Awesome Thread (which the site looks to be down so can't sadly relink here) would probably be a good example but I didn't just want to copy that, as cool as it is, I want my own design. I really couldn't come up with a single idea mask besides like you said possibly the Majora's Mask helmet. While I am a huuuuuge Majora's Mask fan, I did see a mock up someone else did of such an idea (they were going for a Legend of Zelda theme as well) and it just didn't look great or at the very least I don't think many people would get it.

To make it less "busy" I could remove Triforce from the top, put it on the bottom, and enlarge the Link image so it covers the top and top sides, kinda like Miller's mask has for Uncle Sam. That'd probably leave Link still a central theme on it while leaving the triforce image on the bottom and hopefully making it seem less busy. I'll fiddle a bit with it.

Since I'm moving this weekend I'm gonna wait until next week before I send off the idea and get things rolling with the painter guy so feel free to give feedback until then.

Part of me also thinks I'm probably thinking way too hard about this and need to pick something before I'm not happy with anything. Then again, it is a large chunk of cash so I don't want to be second guessing my choices later! XD
