New E3 Footage. Real-time-esque action + hot chick + online multiplayer = I will probably need to at least try this.

Looks interesting! I'll have to keep an eye on it as well and give it a try.

Here's a guided show of their E3 Press Demo. It gives you a better idea of how group dynamic might work and some other classes. I like what I see here except the one thing that bugs me is how important healing apparently is and how much the healer looks like someone who is supposed to stay out of the way and watch green bars rather than get to have fun with the game's combat system.

Gametrailers Link. I might need to write a GT player code into the next revision, especially since I'm really not visiting WeGame anymore.

I guess they dropped the acronym on this now?  I'm strongly considering renaming the topic to match.

Anywho, they took too long bringing this to the US, I think everyone can agree on that.  If this had come out last year, especially before SWTOR and with no sign of Guild Wars 2, this would be something to still be excited about.  Now it is sort of in an awkward position of can it make itself something worth playing in the current MMO space?

There's been a lot negative said about it. Word on the street is (I'm getting a lot of this from the Gamebreaker.TV crowd, especially this episode of This Week in MMO, and @taugrim's tweets and a touch of Gabe from Penny Arcade's remarks):

  • Character movement is locked while attack animations are playing out which makes kiting with the Archer especially really difficult if not impossible.  Complaints have been leveled specifically at the in ability to do a "turn while jump" like in Aion/WoW/Rift to get a "facing the target" without having to interrupt forward momentum.
  • Hit boxes are not compensated for lag.
  • Hit boxes are not standard, meaning that short characters have an unfair advantage in PvP
  • Questing I hear is bad by normal MMO standards, and terrible by SWTOR standards (a comment I question since while I found SWTOR's dialogs interesting, the quest activities themselves were just as bad as any other MMOs to me).
  • Some of these issues are issues Free-to-play action MMOs like Vindictus do not have?

That said, a lot of positive things have been said about it too (again from pretty much the same sources above):

  • It's the most beautiful MMO many people have played to date (especially if you're into the kind of pretty MMOs from Korea tend to be).  It sounds like the Unreal 3 Engine has served the studio well with this game.
  • The combat, despite the above flaws, is still very interesting and fun.  Gabe talked a lot about how much fun combos are, and it sounds like with the right amount of player skill you can take on fights you normally wouldn't in another MMO.  That still sounds exciting.
  • It also sounds like they did a neat job of giving your choice of class, race, and gender a unique look and feel (this I'm getting from Misharum) by customizing how different armor looks on you and giving each combination unique animations.

I've attached a walk through of a fight from the last beta test where a pair of tanks two maned a group-level monster without heals through proper use of mechanics and tactics.   Personally I'm going to wait and see how I feel when the game actually launches rather than do a pre-order, but if it sounds like Guild Wars 2 might still be considerable months away I might pick this up for a little bit.  We'll see.

For those of you who are interested, the OPEN Beta for Tera Online is this weekend, 4/20 - 4/23.  I fully intend to be playing it, unless for some reason a Guild Wars 2 beta happens this weekend (and given we haven't heard yet I doubt it).   Tim and I have Pre-Ordered so our Beta actually starts on April 19th.  If you're interested, give it a shot and if you like the game, there WILL NOT be a character wipe after the Open Beta before launch, so you'll get to keep your guy or gal!

If you want in:

To start your TERA adventure: 1. Create your En Masse account at https://account.enmasse.com.
2. Use the “Enter Code” feature on the Account Overview page to type in your game code: TERABETA
3. Download TERA from the Account Overview page and install.
4. Play TERA!

Want more info, you can check their game guide.   For gameplay footage, here's another video from GameBreaker where he and his fellow tanky friend two man more than one Big Ass Monster at once.  This will show you much the timing and use of your skills and actions are more important than raw numbers with TERA.  If I find any more good gameplay videos before the start of the beta I'll share them too.

The combat in TERA is very enjoyable. It handles like an action game. Not as smooth as single player games like Bayonetta or Darksiders, but (IMO) much better than Vindictius's attempts at the action MMO. The plot is total crap, however.

Personally I would not compare it to single player beatdown games like Bayonetta or DMC because the special moves are performed in those games like they are in fighting games - through combination of directional inputs and multiple attack buttons.  To me, TERA's combat reminds me a lot of Phantasy Star Online.  You are playing more to avoid/block enemy attacks rather than absorb them on purpose.  Different weapons have different attack speeds, swing arcs, and these things affect how many enemies you can hit and when you should swing, etc.  What TERA does to add to that is throw in more modern MMO skill system ON TOP of that, so you have skills you can assign to number keys that allow for additional options in combat than just attack/dodge/block.  Further, you can customize your own skill chains, so if you want to set it up so that one skill triggers you being able to use another with a quick hit of the space bar, you can.

The one thing to note about the game's class system is that classes always wield the same weapon, so if you do try this game and in the first 10 minutes decide you don't like the weapon(s) your character is using, re-roll immediately because it's not like you're going to swap it for a different one at higher level.  The other thing is there isn't a melee based healer class for people who are into that sort of thing.

So you add to that more modern MMO content ideas like Quests, dungeons, etc to that as well so the game is less grindy and repetitive. Now as Tim pointed out though, the Quests are nothing new - we've all seen this and we've seen it done better as well. That said, I've yet to (key word here yet) run into the sort of quest frustrations I have in SWTOR where they send you to go loot something and I'm standing around waiting for other people to stop stealing my loots from me.  I'm sure this is because MOST (as in like 98%) of my quests have been to go some where and kill x of this monster or another, but the combat is enough fun that doesn't bug me  (at least not yet).

Anyway, it's free to try the open beta, so if you're at all curious you have nothing to lose, and lord knows I plan to be playing this weekend so if you do, I'm sure we can hang out and blow up some monsters together.

Oh and just in case you are one of those people for whom having cool/sexy characters in a game are important to you, astetically you could make something that runs the gambit from this:

To this:

Or for something completely different... this....

For more gameplay footage, I did find this full dungeon run from one of the Closed Betas on YouTube.  You might want to mute it depending on your taste in music, but it is an example of how dungeons may look in the game.

EDIT: I'm replacing the old video link with this one.  The video maker is doing the same dungeon but does commentary this time which is handy if you don't know anything about the game.  Its LONGER though so keep that in mind.  You can still watch the other video here.

Edit again: no, I'm switching it back.  This kid isn't talking about TERA he's talking about other MMOs and is being annoying about it.  Sorry.  You can still watch it here if you are curious.

I know at least one other person on this site who would be curious to know this:  TERA is going free-to-play in February.  You can find the announcement here, though the details on this page are more interesting.

Personally I think this is pretty legit.  I like especially (and also think it wise) that they are offering a better status to people who played the game originally and quit (or are still playing) over those who waiting to pick it up now that it's free.  It makes the investment into the game at launch feel more worth it, and it encourages me more to install TERA and leave it "on the side."  The free-to-play tiers sound pretty good too, though I don't know what "default" for "Dungeon Entries" means.  Hopefully it's not too unforgiving - though honestly with BAMs I don't know how much I'd mind being locked out of a dungeon from time to time.

Oh cool! I'm excited to hear that and glad I left the game installed! I still really enjoy the combat model in the game, despite the quest model being boring as dirt. I'll definitely fire it up occasionally for free-to-play.

To quote from another topic:

BountyHunterSAx said:

On the upside - my Slayer is like XL19.  I went hunting Kumas' at XL17. . . killed three. . . and got NO exp for it, nor any drops. I dunno why or how, but I was *PISSED*.

Anyway, point being, both my solo character and my group character are near bam-hunting territory now :).

Two questions:

  1. Just to clarify, what level's your Berzerker?  I know your Slayer is high teens, practically 20.
  2. Were you hunting the BAMs solo?  I know that if you are helping a group out and you're not partied with them you won't get a share of bumpkis, XP or loot.  That's how most MMOs not named Guild Wars 2 work.  I don't think Tim and I saw many drops from the first BAMs we fought either, but we TOTALLY saw xp so if you were completely solo, I have no idea...  2 levels shouldn't be enough to negate the xp earned.
