Livestream is here

Event starts at 1pm eastern.  I may or may not update this post with info, we'll see if I have time.

It is called XBOX ONE (what?).

So far it's all about it being a multimedia device.  Woo.  GET TO THE GAMES DAMN IT.

Some hardware details:

  • 8GB RAM
  • Blue Ray Drive
  • Runs off both the XBOX OS and Windows Kernel
  • New Kinect included (?)
  • Slightly re-designed controller

New XBOX Live:

  • Cloud saves for game data, multimedia (details missing)

First games info comes at half way through the presentation.

  • EA Sports Ignite engine across several games.  (snoooorreee)
  • Then we get a new Forza Motor Sports.  Yay. First EA Sports now Racing Sports (Snoooreee score +2)
  • Something new from the Alan Wake people.  Called "Quantum Break", looks kinda ... I have no idea?  Nothing to go on?

And then we're back on TV again?!?!?  Or are we?  Is Halo involved?  Wait no a Halo TV show.  Who asked for that?  Even if it is produced by Steven Spielberg.

And then XBOX is teaming up with the NFL.  Joy.

Launch this year.

And that's it.

Congratulations Microsoft you just convinced me to buy a Playstation 4 this fall.  You have a LOT of work to do at E3.  A LOT.

Oh wait... a game announcement.  XBOX Exclusive Call of Duty DLC launch first still in place.  Nice.  Don't care.  Big thing about the next Call of Duty: Ghosts.  Joy.  Look, I at least kinda care about CoD... a little... like more than EA Sports or NFL or TV... but if I WAS gonna play the new CoD, I'd play it on PC so... yeah...  Gameplay video was shown.  It looked fine, kinda advanced, but nothing shocking.

You know what... forget that PS4 comment.  I think I'll just keep playing PC if Call of Duty is the best thing Xbox can muster.

So to summarize:

The XBOX One is a strange named device.  It's name, joking aside, comes from the idea that it's the one device you need to manage all your TV attachments.  I think the name works, though it is a bit confusing going from Xbox -> Xbox 360 -> Xbox One.  So what are we supposed to talk about the original XBOX now?  It's a goofy name overall.

It seems to work in that regard - there is some neat TV multitasking involved.  If I was more into TV I'd be pretty excited about stuff.  If I was more into NFL or Sports games I'd be pretty stoked about what they showed.  I'm not, so I'm not impressed.

There's still a chance at E3 for them to show off some slick stuff to get me excited.  Like Bungie's Destiny, or Halo 5 (maybe?) or something but what they've given us right now.  They did mention 15 new exclusive games coming to XBOX ONE within a year of it's launch, 8 of which will be new franchises, and we know almost nothing  about them at this point so who knows.

Still, this is just showing me more and more than I'm a PC gamer at this point...

Post show interview:  NO ALWAYS ON INTERNET REQUIREMENT SO SHUT UP.

OH ALTHOUGH THERE IS THIS Apparently if you want to buy a used game, you have to pay a fee because games will be installed to your XBOX LIVE account wow that's dumb

A PHOTO!

Twitter has informed me that Watch Dogs is coming to XBOX ONE... so there is that.

Hehehe, XBox One! Because we thought it would be fun to confuse people like how Nintendo did with the Wii U.

Wii-U at least *sounds* like it would come after Wii (more letters, more explanation, etc.)

So while my tests run at work I can finally reply to this.

So yeah I mostly caught this reveal and probably about 95% of the stuff my mind was responded with "Who gives a fuck?". The other 5% was doled out to "That's neat but I don't care" and "When are we gonna see game related stuff?".

First off, the name. Dumb. Then again, we all thought Wii and Wii U was dumb and we all lived with it so whatever. I get what they're doing, it's the "One" place for all your media. Neat idea, similar to Wii being about everyone playing games, but still dumb. As we've all said it also just causes confusion since most of us think 'One' as a number and I'm sure many parents buying the system for their kids who aren't in the gaming loop will be vastly confused (I don't envy customer service people trying to explain this come holiday time). But whatever, it's a name that we'll all just live with and just a name.

The other big thing was all about switching applications and showing off Skype while playing or looking up info on a movie or something while something else was playing. Hooray! You've introduced multitasking! Where else could you possibly see this? Oh right, my PC does this and has done this for years. But now my console can do it? Wait, I thought I bought a console to play games, why do I care about multitasking on my console? Oh right, I don't. Nice tech demo but pretty pointless.

TV media with lots of neat little apps and exclusive content with the NFL? Big ol' snore. Again, I guess if I had cable and was a big sports fan this would be neat. I could see if I was still at home with my parents and had cable TV then I'd find it neat to have my own set top box through my game console. Outside of that though, don't care. Additionally I feel like Microsoft is alienating non-US consumers with the sports stuff since it seemed largely US oriented sports. Plus I just don't understand the NFL exclusive content and the $400 million they paid for it. Is it just videos and stuff? Who the fuck pays that much money for exclusive content that'll just show up on YouTube? Whatever, I guess I don't understand it.

Halo TV series directed by Spielberg? Okay, that's nice and all but what does that have to do with the console and games?

ZOMG games eventually were shown! So sports games and racing games... that's pretty standard fair so nothing really great. Oh boy Quantum Break!? All right, now we got something... except it's largely live action trailer. Oh, some actual game play footage!? No wait... that's just some ship running into a bridge. Aaaaand we're done. What was that?

Vergil already linked about the whole "is it online only? Wait used games need fees... but don't? Now we're linking them to our account? What?" debacle. Completely unclear from Microsoft and if they were smart they'd be crystal clear about it. Leaving this out there only worries everyone. Additionally, no mention of Live going off of a subscription fee which is a huuuuge minus in my opinion. I've already seen a bunch of articles from sites mentioning how it's getting harder for Microsoft to justify the subscription what with most of the stuff being available for free on other consoles. None of the stuff I saw them show off adds to it no matter how many times they said you'll be getting "more on Live now". I don't see it Microsoft.

Overall this felt like a huge failing. I guess it's good that E3 is right around the corner since they'll need to make up big time for this. I'd rather get a Wii U and/or PS4 than the Xbox One at this point. Even then my desire for a console this generation is super low.

Well, we now have confirmation of some of the more idiotic things we were fearing about the XBone.

  • System requres a minimum 1.5mbps internet connection and cannot be used to play games after 24 hours if it does not phone home. TV and BluRay features still work without phoning home.
  • Games are all registered to your account, be they digital downloads or disc copies of the game. The ability to give away or trade in in disc games is limited.
  • Kinect still 100% required, though they're claiming you can entirely turn it off through account preferences except for games and apps that require it.

My sources on both of these are Reddit so, take that as you will, still:

If you haven't seen this week's Zero Punctuation, Yahtzee definately sums up the jist of this next gen push so far.

Again though - we haven't seen games.  All we've seen yet is thoretical and hardware stuff.  Games are always what sell (or fail to sell) these systems.  E3 is soon.

When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command -- “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too.

This sounds good to me. It also meshes with the other settings they told us about (manual, auto, off). I see no reason not to trust Big Brother, he just loves us good with his XBone skeleton.

So, for those of you (if any) who don't normally watch/listen to ZeroPunctuation (I know I don't, I don't like his style), I strongly recommend you watch this. It's short and legitimately hillarious.

I want to take a moment to speak to the broadband requirement specifically.  Here are some numbers for you:

  • One third (100 million) Americans haven't adopted broadband at home.
  • 88% ofhouseholds with annual income over $100,000 are connected to broadband.
  • Only 41% of households with annual income less than $25,000 have adopted broadband.
  • Closing the broadband adoption gap will create $32 billion in annual economic value.
  • Students with broadband at home have a 6 to 8% higher graduation rate than those without broadband at home.
(source)

To contexualize these number, this means that Microsoft has chosen a market plan for their console that they

  1. Cannot sell to 1/3 of Americans
  2. Cannot sell to 22% of the upper income America.
  3. Cannot sell to 39% of the lower income America.

And this is just in the US.  We have notoriously low Broadband Adoption rates for a 1st world country, but I'm pretty sure they sell Xbox to countries with struggling infastructure too, and I guess they don't get the Xbone until they get with the times.

Let me ask you, do you think Sony or Nintendo are going to look at those %'s and say "oh yeah we don't need those guys either?"

I really want Microsoft to stop making mistakes on this damn thing, but every time they release press about the damn thing it just sounds worse and worse.

At this point, I just don't care about the Xbone. They'd have to release some badass new game that redefines... some game genre before I'd consider it again. Even then, I expect them to release on the PC later in the year.
