This is almost entirely for my own record. Think of it as "Patch notes" :) Please look for the latest post by me for what the last development update to the site was.

1.0.1:

  • Fixed inconsistency in message posting files.
  • Added a "Remember Me" feature so users don't have to keep logging in so long as they continue to do so from the same machine/browser
  • Changed "new post" text when replying to a message to "new reply."

1.0.2 Development history: NOTICE TO SELF

KNOWN BUG: TOPICS NOT SORTING PROPERLY. CURRENT STATUS: RESOLVED

CURRENTLY the messages component returns topics by asking for all unique values stored in the column "TOPIC" where the forum value of that row == the Forum in question, and then sorts it by ID, which in theory should be most recent as IDs go up with each new post. In practice, this function is evaluating based on some unknown variable instead, and in order to get adequate behavior, the SQL statement must consider the Timestamp of a post, which removes our ability to limit results by UNIQUE TOPICS. Possible causes:

  • When evaluating DISTINCT by just TOPICS, timestamps are no longer considered, and therefore no longer ordered

  • Despite ordering results in DESCENDING ORDER, the ID used to determine the uniqueness of a topic is the first post in its record rather than its last, causing topics to be sorted by order created NOT order last posted.

Evaluate options at a later date that will use PHP to process the unique TOPIC identifiers rather than doing it at the SQL level

Transmission End

I'm probably missing something but why not after grabbing the unique topic ids do a select on the table where they are and grab only the max datetime entries and then order by them? There might be a easier way to do it in all one query but I am unfamiliar with your table layouts.

Because the way I did it there isn't a topic table, there is only a Messages table, which contains the columns 'forum' and 'topic' and I am using crafty Select statements to give the illusion of those having their own table when they in fact don't. So, in short I can't just do a Select statement on a topics table.

During my beta testing, it worked to have the topics sorted by doing a "SELECT DISTINCT X FROM Y WHERE forum=Z ORDER BY Y.ID" and have it output in the order I wanted, but it would seem I didn't test with enough posts or topics or something for that to break, so now I need to figure out how to salvage the current configuration since if I re-do the forum structure, we'll probably have to start over.

EDITWait. Did you say "Max Timestamp" Entries? As in, I could SELECT topics and timestamps and ask it only to return to highest Timestamp of each topic?

EDIT 2: THE MYSTERY DEEPENS! Now when I'm on my database committing the SELECT statements manually, the output is returned and sorted properly if I use the post IDs to sort. Use the EXACT SAME SELECT statement on the site though and they're still outa whack. WTF?

The "View post" links on the updates table and after adding and editing posts will now take you DIRECTLY to the post in question instead of you needing to scroll to it.

Topic ordering still broken.

Indeed sir. Max should work just fine on timestamps.
