Steam Train played it.  It was funny.  Might appreciate.

Jamestown is a *LOT* of fun if you're a fan of shmups but don't *necessarily* like them ball-shreddingly difficult.  I spent quite a bit of time on this game and its Gauntlet mode, and also played it with my roommate.

I think what strikes me the most about it though is that of all the shmups I've played Co-op (Ikaruga, Gradius V, and various "arcadey" ones), this one felt the most natural. Normally, the addition of an extra player feels like an intrusion or a liability -- this game did not feel that way. In fact, with the different ship model possibilities it actually adds to how much you can accomplish quite a bit. Unfortunately I only know that this game has local multiplayer, not sure about online.

All that said, yeah - it's a pretty basic ~5 level shmup. The story quotes are funny -- martian invasion of Jamestown is just a great backdrop for a game like this -- but ultimately I wouldn't advise most folk to drop more than $5 on this. I got mine via Humble Bundle ages ago.

So, Gauntlet mode in this game is what I consider the "main" game. Where you run through all 5 levels one after the other. There are 5 dificulty levels to the game, Normal, Difficult, Legendary, Divine. . . JUDGMENT. The Gauntlet can't be run on normal. Difficult, gives you the first 3 levels. Legendary the first 4. And Divine+ includes the final 'boss' zone - Croatoa.

I've sunk some 20+ attempts at least into the Gauntlet without success on Legendary. In fact, just a couple days ago I managed to get to the very beginning of Lvl4 with just one ship left and was pretty close to insta-gibbed. Tonight, I was gonna run the gauntlet. . . but I did it while listening to the titular track of "Pacific Rim" instead of listening to the game music.

...

I rocked the legendary gauntlet! Went from ~8000+'th place to ~3000th in the highscore list. In the end, I still had 3 lifes left (out of the ~9 you start with). It was something else, honestly, I was in the *ZONE*. It was like when Neo dodges bullets in the Matrix. Shit just slowed down in my mind's eye and I could read my way through the whole milieu of bullets -- dance my way through the boss waves.. . .man it was AMAZING.

And through it all, I was rocking out to the Pacific Rim track. Fifteen minutes of unadulterated (okay, mildly adulterated) awesome. Shit like that makes me appreciate all the work it takes to get good at a shmup. Just felt like sharing :).

Next stop: Divine difficulty and Croatoa (lvl5). Let's see if I can get through two levels.
