Well, sure, in digital media.  But that's a fad.

I think you need to look up the definition of fad again.  Pretty sure it doesn't mean "Something that has grown at an astounding rate for 30+ years and shows no signs of slowing down."  Fads tend to be less than a decade long.  That's assuming I don't get into subtitles and close captioning, which reads better in sans-serif, and has been around for even longer.

Further, even in print sans-serif fonts have great uses.  There's a lot of use for them in marketing, and in fine-print it is still easier to read a sans-serif font than a serif one. They can lend a lighter hearted look/tone to comics. Those serifs make it harder to read something the fewer dots/pixels you can dedicate to each individual letter after all.  I appreciate it when books about futuristic subjects, especially gaming books like RPG books or wargaming books use sans-serif instead of serif because it tends to fit character better, but that's more a stylistic preference than a function I can argue.

My problem with Comic Sans is how ugly it is and my problem with Papyrus is how illegible it is.  Even at high font sizes it is still a difficult font to read, and more than a few words in it gives me a headache. There are particular serif and sans-serif fonts I think are terrible, but both have the uses to me.

To rest my case, look at how terrible these 3 fonts look:

Worst Fonts Ever

Papyrus not nice

Fonts by style

In the defense of Sans-Serif, here are some beautiful Sans-Serif fonts.

Raleway font

Novenco FontBrandon Grotesque

Maven Pro

(admittedly the ultra light on Maven Pro here is too light IMO)

Kitty and I made tons of use of Kozuka here on our wedding stuff.  It helped it look modern and professional:

Kozuka font

I have nothing against Garamond, it's a beautiful font as well, but there are too many nice Sans-Serif fonts to condemn them all.

Kind of a low blow bringing in your marriage invitations, since now anything I say about sans serif fonts I'm saying about your marriage invitations.

Not sure if well played.  :-/

It was not intended as a low blow, but it is the truth.  I wish I had re-uploaded the assets so I could better demonstrate how we made use of both serif and sans-serif, but we saw no point to maintaining the web hosting for it after the event was over and I haven't uploaded it to a backup on the machvergil webspace yet.

To be honest it's getting difficult to tell if you're trolling or being serious at this point.  If you're trolling I'll let it rest, but if you're not well:

Cat back-rub

Round 2 bro.  You cannot prove to me a rational reason for the condemnation of all sans-serif fonts.  If you have a personal aesthetic issue with them, fine that's your taste and I can't change it.  You cannot prove to me that it would be better for human communication to end sans-serif.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!  This didn't save the first time I typed it, so I get to do it again.  That's ok, because I really want to talk about fonts.

*cue Nate running away forever with Mike because his stupid wife had another damn conversation about fonts*

I like sans serif for like, emails and stuff.  Tahoma and Verdana are my typical go-tos (look less stupid than Arial), though I am starting to like Calibri.  Very clean, easy to read.

The thing is, they just look...........simple.  They're clean, but boring.

I like using serif fonts for posters and presentations because they make your words look interesting, they have a flow to them.  Looks a little like art.  Perpetua, Palatino Linotype and the aforementioned Garamond are some of the ones I like using.  Times New Roman..........irks me.  I will use it, but I don't like using it.

Do I use Comic Sans?  No.  Does it bother me when comics use Comic Sans?  Not really.  Do I hate how over-used Papyrus is, especially in stupid situations?  Dear lord yes.  Different fonts have their places and uses.  Let's all agree to disagree on our favorites!

Canadians are my favorite mythological creature.

For the record, this is a comic (click for larger):

That font is not comic sans:

Comic Sans

Compare the lower case "a".  Compare the fact that the font actually used in comics is more uniform, cleaner, and easier to read.

Let's all agree to disagree on our favorites!

This has been my goal all along.  Condemning an entire font-type (except for maybe mono-type) is silly.
