Apparently, If you own X-Com Enemy Unknown you have already recieved an automatic copy of the Evolve alpha and should appear in your STEAM thingy.

God, I suck at t3h englishes.

I think most of you heard this over the course of the weekend but I thought I'd share it here just for record.

I feel this game has huge potential for Game Knights, but that depends on how matchmaking works in February when it comes out. If we will have the ability to set up private lobbies with all 5 players, or alternatively private lobbies where bots can fill the missing slots.  These features were understandably missing in an Alpha based around testing matchmaking and server stress, but I hope at launch they deliver those features.  If matchmaking works at launch like it does now, with no practice vs AI or training options, and the inability to make parties larger than 4, and the not being able to be monster if you're in a party, then that might be enough to convince me to not even buy the game.

Agreed on all points. I had a lot of fun playing as the hunters but playing as the monster was a big "wtf do I do now? How do I do things? Oh hunters are on me. Crap, can I escape? Oh look we're done." Seeing as it is alpha and they gave out a lot of keys, I'm guessing this was very much a stress test and general bug test and to build up some hype. Hoping they're smart enough to put in normal game building lobbies and some sort of tutorial on playing as the monster.

I also have to say, my computer's becoming a bit out of date but even setting the graphics on low the game looks very pretty and I had a decent frame-rate throughout. Very impressed on the technical side already even in alpha form.

EDIT: As a side-note, they've extended the beta until tomorrow. I'm definitely down for playing it some more.

It'd be awesome if MonkeyLord could weigh in on this because he's played (and won) as Monster more than me, but the impression I'm starting to get with this game is player skill is a huge factor.  This is problematic with the Alpha since the instruction they give on playing monster well is... well terrible.  It's understandable then that monster players keep getting wasted in under 5 minutes when there is so much to know and so little to teach.  I have noticed that with each game as Monster I felt like I was getting better, and I've definitely had games where I could tell the monster we're up against was better than the ones I usually hunt.

In other words I'm trying to find a nice way to say "if playing monster feels unfair, you need to play monster better."  Unfortunately in the current state of the Alpha, playing monster better means banging your head against losing and trial and error until that happens.

That said, I do feel like Stage 3 monster needs a slight buff.  Not a huge one, but something to make it easier to power through an entrenched team of hunters camping the power relay.  Either

  1. Remove respawn for hunters.  This rewards the monster for taking out hunters early which makes the stage 3 win more guaranteed.  The problem with this though is that the hunter team kinda needs ALL it's parts or its chances of taken down an armored monster is really low.
  2. Remove the time-limit on the monster destroying the power relay.
  3. Make the power relay attackable while the hunters are defending it, so just defending the relay after Stage 3 is a safe counter to it.

I would be curious to hear what tips, if any MonkeyLord had.  Perhaps about what skills to take in what order.

I do want to play more tonight, though I think I'll want to make sure I get some monster games in.

I did not enjoy playing as the hunter(s) much - despite having played this role with the Game Knights as well as solo-queue and winning at least half the time. It felt a lot like playing a game of CoD, Battlefield, or even Exterminatus: Shooter-y. My involvement was a tertiary matter, and I really never felt like I could properly do my job. More importantly, I felt no real desire to do so since the genre really isn't one I much cared for.

Playing the Monster on the other hand I enjoyed. I've played the monster about 25-30 times at this point. I have also lost about 25-30 times. And yes, with the long load times, losing 3-4 times in a row *is* very frustrating. I've come to Level 2 multiple times -- each time without taking a single hit since my evasion was effective -- I've "killed" multiple member of a team simultaneously on 2-3 occasions. But nothing that makes me feel I actually might have had a chance at winning by anything other than blind luck of *happening* to not run into my opponents for at least five minutes.

Overall, I want to like this game a whole heck of a lot more than I actually like it. The concept of 1v4 sounds INCREDIBLY fun, and as many of you know I have always had a soft-spot for playing bestial, non-humans [Hecarim, Nocturne, Khazix, The Zerg, etc.]. Yes, an in-game tutorial on "how to Monster" would be nice; but I've already watched streams of Goliath players and youtube vids -- and the only times I've ever seen one of them win is when the hunters did things that made me facepalm repeatedly (like miss with the arena shield twice, or send the healer into 1v1 combat against the monster?)
I'm sure there's more room for skill and tactics as Goliath than I employ or execute on. I'm sure that there's a better way to play the Monster. But if the Hunters play it right, I just don't see how the Monster *can* win without getting lucky.

Maybe I'm more of a Kraken player. Lemme grind for another what? 5-10 hours? Try and unlock that?

Regarding Evolve private lobbies at launch, I actually got a quick reply on twitter from a dev.  Sometimes social media works guys!  Sounds like private lobbies are supported presently but were (understandably) removed for the Alpha.

This is great news!

I've decided I'm excited about this coming out now. I know stoof was talking about picking it up. I'm curious who else or is planning to.

I pre-ordered Evolve off of Amazon. $5 "video game credit"+ the monster pack with an extra monster + you get some of the hunters you would have to unlock automatically at launch.

Edited after looking at some of the old posts about the game.. I probably don't actually look at the forums enough.

I played the monster and probably had a slightly better than 50% win count during the beta weekend (not counting the first two games where I was definitely WTFing). After those first couple games it became a LOT of fun. It is definitely something that requires some practice to do. It's partially about patience, stalking the jungle and killing creatures while not alerting the hunters, and then partially about selecting the "right" abilities. Namely those that can cause the most chaos when you're inevitably trapped in an arena with the hunters. Even at level 1, if you can do of hit and run tactics, you can survive and get away to become stronger.

Ultimately you're best off if you can level up to 3 on creeps and then find a hunter who is a little away from the rest of the group to kill.. but a couple times I got trapped in an arena and managed to kill an enemy team off at level 2. It's definitely about focus fire. Generally targets 1 and 2 are the medic to prevent heals/shields and the trapper, because if you can take out the trapper, even if it's only a knockdown instead of a  kill it takes down the arena.

Finishing a kill is also a big deal. Once again, even if you don't knock down the whole team, it means that hunter is out of the game for a couple minutes, helping you get away and build back armor if you need to. And they only get 2 (I think..) respawns total.

Ultimately I enjoyed playing the monster. It was a lot of fun, and when I won, I got to think man I just outsmarted 4 other people. I'm a fucking badass. That being said, I also had fun as the hunter, because it was.. hey I just teamed up to take this real dude that's way more powerful than the 4 of us. Those 2 feelings are basically why I pre-ordered the game. The 3rd reason is essentially supporting this kind of asymmetrical combat idea.

Really the one thing I'm worried about is that it will end up like LoL. I'm not going to want to take the time to learn "REAL" PVP once people "learn" the game and fighting the bots is kinda fun, but ultimately no challenge.

TL;DR- RAAR MONSTER BADASS! WOO HUNTER WOLFPACK!

Ok, totally into buying this game if I can run it.  Nate was able to play in the previous event, but they are saying it's for Windows 7 (we have Vista).  Checking about whether or not we'll be able to play w/o updating to 7.

Note: we probably would be ok with moving into the future if we didn't go through re-installs a year ago.  I hate having to move everything and do re-installs.  Most of that is because I am lazy.

EDIT: Well, I am not purchasing Evolve for next Tuesday as it appears my laptop is old enough that it will not run it (the CPU/GPU aren't up to the task, apparently).  So we may try it on Nate's computer?  I also have a chunk of change coming as a reimbursement from the hospital that I may dip into and update my "gaming rig" with a new one.  Actually, it would solve the issue my sis has with not having a computer to play GW2 on if I passed my current one on to her.....

Evolve is 25% off this weekend on Steam so if you have decided to get it, this might be the weekend.
