I've watched my nephew play Titanfall (jebus he's that old) and it's definitely looked entertaining. For $15 (heck $20 is fine too) I'd pick it up to play.

Earlier this week I installed ArcheAge to try it.  I played the game for about an hour and walked away unimpressed.  I know that's not long enough to fairly judge an MMORPG, but it is enough to tell if it is boring you, and ArcheAge bored me.  It's a shame - the idea of getting to build custom classes with something less onerous than the WoW-Style talent system has promise, but this isn't a world I feel motivated to explore or learn more about.

I'd rather play Firefall than this.

If you want to see in detail I did record my experience.  I don't think it will make a very entertaining video, but since I made the effort I thought I'd share it.

Would there be any interest in a Diddy-Kong-Racing style  multiplayer mayehm game? Think Mariokart, but with Karts, hovercrafts, planes, etc. I'm pretty sure everyone in our group must have played *some* iteration of mariokart; but it occurs to me I don't know if anyone's a fan of the gameplay enough to want to try it again?

The game I'm thinking of is Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. I've heard a *LOT* of really great things about it and am probably gonna pick it up myself to try out today. But my biggest interest in such a game would be enjoying the Party-Game style lighthearted multiplay within our group.

Kart racers really aren't my thing.  Racing games in general really aren't my thing. I only make an exception for Mario Kart and even then it's because I'm sitting on a couch with my allies/opponents.

Wanted to bring this thread back in case we wanted a fixed place to talk about future game night games without a time limited thread like one for a specific Wednesday.  I'm also strong considering find a way to make this thread "Pinned" or "Sticky" sorta like the weekly game nights thing is.

I think we ought to bring Sword Coast Legends into the Wednesday rotation.

I know you've probably heard it is terrible.  This is not the case.  What I had been assuming was well-intentioned criticism from the aging Baldur's Gate et. al. fandom has actually turned out to be tantamount to a smear campaign, and that is really a shame, because the game is solid.  It's not perfect -- I wouldn't even call it a pro title, really -- but it is solid.

The problem is that it looks an awful lot like Baldur's Gate on paper but in execution it is markedly more casual.  If you've played Dragon Age, you're familiar with the concept.  MMO-style cooldown abilities on a hotbar, talent-tree-style advancement, and item-slot equipment loadouts.  The major differences are that SLC has no first- or third-person view options (the camera is locked in a zoomable isometric view), has no programmable AI for companions (which I actually find to be an advantage rather than a drawback), and does have four-player co-op with an option for a fifth player in a dungeon master role

You can engage this co-op mode in the campaign or in downloadable community-created modules, but what really makes SLC shine is that it contains a procedurally generated Dungeon Crawl mode that is quick to pick up and execute.  The best compliment I can pay this mode is that it feels like playing D&D.  There is no story, and the rules are heavily abstracted, but the dungeon exploration vibe is right on the money.

The biggest drawback right now is that the game is expensive.  At 50% off during the Holiday Steam Sale it is currently still $20.  I'm wary of suggesting anyone make that kind of investment, especially for a game that is being so lambasted by critics, even if those critics are not reviewing SLC so much as they are reviewing the absence of a game that never existed.  But it has my vote.

Maybe if we can scrape together three or four people who are interested enough to pick it up at risk, we can make some videos to demonstrate how the game plays.  YouTube is not delivering quality demonstrations, regrettably (although it is worth noting that everyone in the videos I have seen seems to be having a good time).

I picked up the following games using steam gift money from other folks:

  • Vermintide
  • Helldivers
  • Off-World Trading Company
  • Sword Coast Legends

So next time we have a normal game night (Probably next week) I would be interested in giving any of those a shot.

Dominion and I did some local co-op of Helldivers last night just the two of us and I had a good time with it. Definiately a game you'll want a console controller like the 360/PS3/XBO/PS4's for so you have both analog sticks and the d-pad as well.  The steam version does seem to suffer from the Rocket League local play issue where since you cannot be logged into more than one steam account as once, any local co-op people are "guests" but I'm sure we on't have that problem over game night so you can keep up your unique progression there.

I also want to thread bump for J's post about Sword Coast Legends above this one, in case you missed it over the holidays.

To our Wii U owners, I also own Super Mario Maker now.  So I don't know if enough of us own that now to do level exchanges or anything like that, but maybe we can come up with something there?  Pretty sure my Wii U pad will reach to my desktop so I can still play it on headset.

Playing Helldivers was pretty fun! I think it's definitely worth a buy. I see some people have grabbed Vermintide and am curious what they think. Taking a quick look at Sword Coast Legends I feel kinda meh about it on first glance. If lots of others pick it up and start playing I'll give it a bigger consideration. Off World Trading company looks super interesting but I'm wary of early access games. Love the concept and idea though.

I'll pick up whatever everyone else picks up.

EDIT: Tomorow's the last day of the winter sale. It is the best time for us to pick up these potential game night games. Does anyone want to say "definitely this one" to anything?

I already picked up Helldivers and Vermintide. I don't know if others will enjoy Helldivers but Vergil and I were having fun.
