The house Sid Meier built, Firaxis, will send out an "interstellar strategy game" in early 2015. Gamespot details that Sid Meier's Starships is heading to PC, Mac, and iPad, with no pricing or Android version announced.

"My goal was to create an experience that focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration," said Meier.

It was literally announced today. Nothing beforehand.

So Sid Meyer... Is it going to be another Civilization style game or something else? They already have a Civilization In Space game that just came out!

My guess is this will be either:

  1. More of a Galactic Empire 4X game (See Masters of Orion) as opposed to Beyond Earth which was CIv but in the future and on another planet.
  2. A fleet-based strategy game where you are sorta managing a galactic civilization but more managing a fleet of starships, kinda like I imagine Sid Meier's Pirates was.

Pirates! was more managing your own pirate fame by getting a good ship, sacking towns, fighting other ships, dueling etc. To be honest when I heard Starships being announced I kinda hoped it'd be sorta like Pirates! was since that game was a lot of fun. If they could keep that same sort of adventuring feel while managing multiple ships via some fun fleet mechanics that'd be pretty badass. However from what it sounds like it'll just be a turn-based strategy game, which I'm cool with but was hoping for something different.

... and now I want to go play Pirates! because open-world pirating across the seas is fun.

The description that says it is focusing on starship COMBAT throws me off a bit. Otherwise based on the fact it's the same female narrator from beyond earth, same basic story arc, and the colony that they're showing being built is definitely a beyond earth colony would make me think it's just a Civ in space expansion for beyond earth.

I haven't taken the time to read it yet, but this article might explain Starships more.

And now we have some gameplay footage with Polygon with Starships.

The first thing that occurs to me is how low budget the game looks.  I'm wondering what happened to Firaxis' money.

That said, it still looks like it could be interesting.

So this showed up on my Steam queue. Apparently it came out last week, only costs $15 normally and is currently 10% off. I didn't think this was coming out for a while now. Debating picking it up on the general principal.

Edited for additional comments: Apparently, according to reviews both positive and negative, this is definitely not a true 4X game. It is apparently a casualish strategy game tied into beyond earth. If you own both games there's some very minor cross bonuses. It could still be interesting.
