This weekend is Intel Extreme Masters 2015 "Season Finals" in Katowice, Poland.  I don't know much about how the ESL does their stuff to tell you what process, aside from invitation, that resulted in them bringing the teams that are here.   You can watch the videos live on ESL's site.

I will attach the live streams for both the Starcraft 2 and League of Legends streams to this post, but chances are good or interesting games of either may get posted later once they end up on their YouTube Channel.

League of Legends

The League of Legends invitational is set up as a two group tournament bracket that ends in a final bracket.  Both brackets appear to be double elimination, best of 1's in the group stage.

Group A:

  • Cloud9 (NA)
    vs
  • GE Tigers (KR)
  • SK Gaming (EU)
    vs
  • Yoe Flash Wolves (SEA)

Group B:

  • Gambit Gaming (EU)
    vs
  • CJ Entus (KR)
  • Team Solo Mid (NA)
    vs
  • Team WE (China)

There will then be a playoff based on the winners of these groups (I honestly don't know how the playoff is determined)

What is very interesting about this tournament is the decisions on who to invite.  Team Solo Mid & SK Gaming make a ton of sense as they are currently #1 in their regions, as are GE Tigers in Korea.   However, Cloud9 is in third, and don't have a commanding third either, as is EJ Entus, Gambit gaming just recently reached 4th place in EU, and Team WE is second from last place in China right now! So clearly these teams are being invited based on reputation or something, because they are not reflective of their current strength.

Starcraft II

The Starcraft 2 Tournament is a more traditional tournament bracket.  16 Players were invited (all are Korean of course) and play out best-of-5s to advance.  The players invited are:

  • herO (P)
    vs
  • cure (T)
  • BByong(T)
    vs
  • Solar(Z)
  • Zest(P)
    vs
  • hydra(Z)
  • INnoVation (T)
    vs
  • Life (Z)
  • Flash (T)
    vs
  • Trap (P)
  • FanTaSy (T)
    vs
  • Rain (P)
  • Maru (T)
    vs
  • Patience (P)
  • Dark (Z)
    vs
  • Taeja (T)

So that's 5 Protoss, 6 Terrans, and 4 Zerg.

As of this post both tournaments will have already started, but I wanted the opening post to be without results.

From the round of 16, this TvZ between InNoVation and Life are two of the players favored to win the tournament facing each other in the first round.  Strong games from both players, and recommended to me by a co-worker who has started watching pro Starcraft recently.

(Start times for Life vs. INnoVation.  Please to note: added fake times as needed to reach 5 for spoiler-free watching).

I've gotta say, watching this I'm instantly impressed by just how far the state of game-casting has come in Starcraft. In particular -- I don't know if they did this before and I didn't notice - but the *zoom-out* feature is phenomenal! God how I wish i could do that in-game.

I have some updates for NA LoL fans.  I will put it in a spoiler tag, but if you don't want spoilers, here are all four games C9 and TSM have played in from yesterday.

Well I have good news and bad news NA LoL fans.

The bad news is, Cloud9 bombed out spectacularly.  Two games and they were done. In their defense, their first loss was handed to them by the #1 team in Korea right now, GE Tigers, so that outcome is understandable.  Unforutunately their 2nd loss, against South East Asia's #1 team Yoe Flash Wolves, is much less.  I missed the GE Tigers game (and I hear it was a stomp) but Cloud9 had their game against the Flash Wolves and just failed to finish it.  Very frustrating to watch.

The good news is Team Solo Mid is showing strong.  TSM beat both China's Team WE and Korea's CJ Entus to get out of the group stages, and have overall looked strong so far.

If you have nothing to do around when I post this, TSM is in their semi-final series against Flash Wolves right now.

Day two of IEM Katowice was certainly interesting!

First, Yoe Flash Wolves eliminated SK Gaming to advance to face TSM.

Then TSM defeated them in a best of 3, advancing to the finals.

China's Team WE had to beat GE Tigers, Korea's current #1, to advance to the finals, and against all odds they somehow did!

ESL still hasn't posted all the games to to the China set yet to YouTube so I'll have to update the post with game 3 later, but I'll put the TSM games up now.

I'm only on Game 2, but still - must stop to admire this. Game 2, 18minutes in, Bjergsen in mid *

**EDIT* Holy Shit, we won! I can't believe we won. I knew TSM was doing awesome but...just wow this is spectacular.

In an upset no one called, China's Team WE (World Elite), who again is like second to last place in the Chinese standings this season, arguably shouldn't have been invited to IEM this year, defeated Korean #1 GE Tigers (a team who had yet to lose a set this year) to make it to the finals to face Team Solo Mid.

I am attaching the games from that series below.  I haven't watched yet but tweets I spied last night lead me to believe TSM won the contest, which is a great ending for the NA Region, and solid for TSM themselves, even if they never got the chance to test themselves against the Tigers.

EDIT 1: Holy shit game 1 got intense at the end!  What a comeback by TSM!

EDIT 2: WTF the Level 1 at the start of game 2.  Game 2 ends up being much more one-sided win for TSM.

EDIT 3: An even more commanding performance by TSM. TSM Wins the set! NA takes IEM Katowice!  WOOOO!

I enjoyed listening to this series - a young Korean player Dark(Z) faces off against multiple-champion Taeja(T) and gives him quite the series!  Can Taeja defend his title?

EXTRA: This set between Hydra(Z) vs Zest (P).  Game 1 is missing from this youTube video for some reason, but game 2 is a pretty exciting back and forth with some solid Blink micro harass, though that match reinforces why I am so salty about HoTS still - the swarm host just shouldn't exist and it's amazing how much it ruins the game.

That's a funny coincidence you noticed St00f!

So game 1 of this set is an interesting match I've not seen before.  Nice to see some non-standard play for once.

Edit update: Pretty entertaining series overall IMO.  I saw some strats and plays not really done in this tournament yet.  Game 1 was the most hype but the others are exciting as well.
