In this series between Fantasy (T) and Trap (P), I get a crazy idea of just how good solid Fenix or Oracle micro can be in a TvP match up.  Nuts.

EDIT: The last game of the series, which starts at 1hr, 30min, is quick, close and intense.

2nd Series to add: Dark vs Maru.  What Dark does with Nydus worms brings me hope that there may yet be innovation in Starcraft 2... as in actual innovation not the player named "innovation."

Dark vs. Varu was an awesome series to watch. I felt like Game 1 was just a case of bad luck. Most the time that kind of thing would have been scouted by a marine on the edge of the base. I've seen such scouting patterns in pro-games often enough that this felt more like a "whoops, my bad - lose game" scenario, akin to when you're first learning to wall and you build your wall with a hole in it by mistake.

But game 2? Game 2 proved to me that game 1 was not a fluke. It's this kind of thing that reminds me both of how important a map is in determining the flow of a game but also how important it is not to get "stuck in a fight" and then constantly repeating that same fight over and over in a pitiful attempt to hold the line. You *need* to step out of the moment and re-assess the situation and think of options and alternatives.  . . and our victor did just that.

Looking forward to Game 3 now.

Trap and Dark have been two of my favorite players to watch this tournament, and just my luck, they faced off against each other in the semi-finals.  Will the last remaining zerg prevail, or will the "wing commander" prove his protoss air dominance?  An exciting series that I felt every game of which was close.

Oh, I disagree -- at least for the last game or two. They felt more one-sided. I dunno, I've been out of it a while but I find the forcefields ... *frustrating*. Frustrating to watch them in play. Frustrating to see them played against, etc. I feel pretty similarly about swarm hosts; but at least swarm hosts don't seem to be very powerful -- with forcefields it just feels like you can (not arbirarily) hold a choke without committing to a fight. Use it to split an army and you can even *profit* by killing the front half.

But then - no clue how protoss could *ever* fight off zerg effectively without it either.

I think the first two games of the series were amazing. The hero-ultralisk play blew my mind.  I really thought that Dark had gotten pushed back so hard he'd not be able to recover...and then he did. A good semifinals to be sure.

EDIT: First revision of this post was more confrontational than I wanted it to be.

See, I cannot tell you how many ZvP I have watched since HotS came out, let alone in this tournament where P is winning, Z builds Swarm Hosts, P's lead evaporates and losses.  I hate swarm hosts.  They are another example of Blizzard's SC2 team failing to understand their own game that they added a unit that is so worthless in one match up and overpowered as hell in another.  That Trap seems to have figured out how to play around them is a miracle.

The other thing is Trap has gone through this tournament winning off of sick Oracle micro, Phoenix Micro, and crazy Warp Prisim drops, and Dark's play style shut this down time and time again, forcing Trap to fall back on Protoss ground ball.  The commentators even mention in every game how one player or another is done and somehow they managed to take the game back under control.

But then - no clue how protoss could *ever* fight off zerg effectively without it either.

The same way they did in Starcraft 1 I imagine.  They wouldn't need it if they hadn't built a game that demands their existence.  Like many of the stupid parts of Starcraft II, someone had a terrible idea, and then they had to make a terrible counter to it.  I hate force fields too.

Point is I didn't feel like after this series Trap proved himself the better player beyond a shadow of a doubt.  Dark went to blows with him time and time again, had some great micro in some cases, even better macro in others, and knew his opponent to an extent.  I'm still impressed with both players at this point.  You want to watch a one-sided series, watch Zest destroy Bbyong in the other semi-final. That's a one-sided series.

On the one hand I'm really pleased Trap has made it to the finals.  My three favorite players over the course of the tournament were Bbyong, Trap, and Dark, and I would have loved for two of them to meet in the finals.  Sadly, Trap and Dark had to go at each other's throats, and Bbyong was just outdone by Zest.

I'm not pleased that it's a PvP final.  But it is, and I will watch it anyway.

I'm also not pleased that ESL broke up all the matches for this series into individual youtube videos >.< so 5 youtube video attachments incoming.

As of writing of this post I have not finished watching the series so no comment from me on how it went yet.

Edit: St00f!  It's an all Glasses Final!
