Zero Punctuation Game Reviews

If you are a VGcats reader then you probably already saw the link for this.  If not, Zero Punctuation game reviews are hilarious, scathingly sarcastic game reviews by British born Austrailian Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw.   He got his start doing his biz on You Tube but then the Escapist picked him up.  Now he does a review every week.  Much like Penny Arcade I do not always agree with his opinions but even when I don't the way he presents them is hilarious.  Give him a watch and you'll see what I mean (warning, EXTREMELY FOUL LANGUAGE ahead).

Games of 2008 Poll
Written by Adam (Vergil)

Okay so the Holiday lineup poll has been up about four weeks without a single vote so I'm going to go ahead and take it down.  Our next line up, there were quite a few solid titles we were supposed to get this year that didn't make it out in time.  While I myself am a firm believer in "However long it takes to do it right," I'm curious as to which of these titles you are looking forward to the most.  I know for me it's a tough call between Starcraft 2 and Brawl... wait... no it's not...

Anyway, I picked one "highly anticipated" game from each platform and one multi-platform (since most of us are Soul Calibur fans anyway) and threw it up for voting.

Beacon, a reason I'm glad I'm not on Facebook

In case you had not heard yet, Facebook has a new ad service called Facebook Beacon. This service allows a site to add 3 lines of code that will cause it to publish when Facebook users buy stuff, sign up for their site, etc.  Basically it turns your Facebook page into a giant free-advertising engine for the sites you visit.  Additionally, only recently were Facebook users given the chance to opt out of the system and even so they can't opt out for good, just on a visit-by-visit basis.  I don't know what disgusts me more the fact that this service even exists, or the fact that Facebook is acting like it's the hottest thing since TV and its so awesome that it lets your friends spy on what websites you visit.

I found out about this from the December 3rd episode of Morgan Webb's Webb Alert online tech news show if you want to learn more, including about how Facebook lied to its partners about users willingly opting into the service, which caused Coke to bail out.

Ugly Ugly Gamespot
Written by Adam (Vergil)

So if you're a reader of Penny Arcade and checked out today's comic already, then you already know that Gamespot has fired one of their star reviewers, Jeff Gerstmann.  While there still isn't concrete evidence that this is the cause of the firing, Jeff, who is sort of Gamespot's resident shooter reviewer (which means he's been real busy lately) gave a scathing 6.0 review of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, a game I spoke of in a previous post by the people who made Hitman.  Jeff went so far as to open his review with "Kane & Lynch is an ugly ugly game," going on to explain he doesn't mean graphically as much as it's glitchy full of shallow characters you just want to hate, and a dark, ugly story.

Prime 3 complete.
Written by Adam (Vergil)
Friday, 30 November 2007
Well I finished Metroid Prime 3 last night, bringing the number of games I've finished this week up to 3 (provided you don't count beating the last boss of Twilight Princess for dad or beating Portal a second time which explains why it feels like I've beaten 5 games).

Overall Metroid Prime 3 is quality and anyone looking to get some legs out of their Wii should get it.  At the same time though its hard to shake this strange feeling of disappointment.  That's not to say the game was bad by any means but in the end it wasn't what I hoped it would be.
