Site viewing bug - 2008/02/08 10:28 This thread discusses the Content article: Site viewing bug

Yeah, it's been really slow for me too. It was never the fastest-loading site on my favorites list, but now it's just ridiculus. Sometimes requires a refresh or 2. I hope you can find out what the problem is, and it's not too big to fix.

edit: spelling

Re:Site viewing bug - 2008/02/08 11:11 I've run the table optimizer for zOOm Media Gallery and I think that's helped... a little. Today after work I will submit a support ticket to goDaddy and see if they can tell me why this site runs so slow. I think it has somethign to do with the database and being old since my other sites run fine.

I even ran a web optimizer report on this site and it's only 85k. That means it should only take 19.43sec on 56k, and 2sec on T1. I have done sites for MSU that are much bigger than that which load way faster.

Anyway, I'll keep you updated. I need to be working on my work sites for now so I'll try and tackle this over the weekend.

Re:Site viewing bug - 2008/02/10 13:33 Well GoDaddy claims they monitor the servers and such for probable issues and found nothing. They asked for a specific URL to give an example, but every URL for this site goes bad when it goes bad.

However my site is on a shared server environment (fitting of the low low cost I pay) so other sites can cause the server I'm on to slow in general, meaning my site might not have anything to do with it. If I want more resources I can update to a virtual or dedicated server, but I imagine that costs much more.

So I'm back at a loss for what could be going on. My next guess is to see if linking the podcast from the home page is what causes the slow down, but I don't think that would be the case. Maybe this is an excuse to try upgraded from the extremely outdated Mambo to Joomla finally, a process that I hope doesn't make me lose all the hard work I've put into this site.

Re:Site viewing bug - 2008/02/10 19:36 I hope that you can do the update without losing anything, if that's the route you end up going -- it seems silly to spend the money to get a dedicated server. Kinda sucks that GoDaddy wasn't able to give you a solid answer. You’re what keeps me believing this world’s not gone dead

Re:Site viewing bug - 2008/02/12 11:15 Well, it's loading tons faster on my end -- did the problem just sort of fix itself? You’re what keeps me believing this world’s not gone dead

Re:Site viewing bug - 2008/02/12 16:58 Same here. I was thinking about posting something to that effect. Let's watch it for a bit and see what comes of things.

Some theories as to what might of fixed it:

1 ) I tried running a PHP optimization of the tables. Why the benefits wouldn't show up until today I don't know but that could be it.

2 ) GoDaddy may have been having bandwidth issues during the time around the Super Bowl thanks to that stupid "exposure ad" they ran.

3 ) My complaint may have brought something to their attention that was thought to be unrelated and then they flipped a switch and now we're fine. Who knows.
