Re:Outgrowing Anime - 2005/10/13 23:11 I think it's combination of taste change (i.e. Ranma was good in high school, kinda boring now) and there's nothing honestly good on (possibly nothing that fits into our new taste). That and AS has terrible timing of stopping a series. Honestly if I was watching FMA on AS I would've gotten bored by it now as well. AS picked a horrible time to stop it and took forever to put new episodes back on. I think Adam and I had some sort of conversation that brought about that perhaps AS is trying to take an anime and make it like an American TV show, thinking you can break it up into "seasons" with so many episodes to maximize profit, which clearly wasn't done in Japan. FMA is 52 eps straight plot, you can't break it into seasons, and it doesn't work like that, hence why possibly we just lost interest (well I've seen it all, watched it all fansubbed). Samething with Champloo and Inuyasha. I was interested at first, now I don't really care if I see new eps or not. They just broke it up and they took to long to reput it out. Now also there's nothing really good out in torrents either that fit my taste, except for Bleach, which I find really good. But that was the first series I started watching again since I watched FMA which was all last year.

So honestly, I don't think it's "we've grown out of it," there's just nothing really good out and AS is just terrible at splitting up shows. I'd hate to think what would've happened had they split up GitSAC. I probably would've stopped watching it if they took as long to bring out new eps. At least they showed all of an official first season. But seriously, I have this kinda phase as well quite a bit. As I mentioned the last series I seriously watched was FMA which was all last year. I started watching Bleach probably a few weeks before the start of the school year maybe? Long period of no real good anime out, or nothing that could hold my interest.
I'm gonna critically kick you in the dick.

Re:Outgrowing Anime - 2005/10/13 23:51 In any case, relying on AS for new anime is just plumb futile. Cowboy Bebop is the only one of my top-favorite series I saw for the first time on Adult Swim...and it's since slipped to fourth place. If you're torrent-capable, I very highly recommend Gankutsuou...it's an adaption of The Count of Monte Cristo, and my favorite of the new series I've seen in the past year (and 3rd overall). I'm fairly sure it hasn't been licensed yet....

As for the Wanna-Be-The-Best theme, I didn't associate with any Japanese schoolkids so I'm not really any more capable to comment but Ask John has answers to questions many and various...there's likely something in there but with 5 years of archives I don't know where to start looking... I don't think future prospects for Japanese youth are all that bleak though...For instance, regarding college entrance exams - if you don't pass the exam, you study some more and try again...failing doesn't mean you're not smart or capable enough to get into college, just that you haven't worked hard enough.

And AUGH I WANNA PLAY GW TOOOO.... My new laptop should be getting here in the very beginning of November, so I can finally get back into the gaming groove. I haven't done any PVP at all yet, though...since I never did trust my computer to not lag horribly at exactly the wrong time during a match...

Re:Outgrowing Anime - 2005/10/14 13:11 See but part of my point with this article is that I am Torrent-capable, and yet I did not watch Get Backers when Almasy suggested it, I did not watch Wolf's Rain when that was around, I did not fan-sub Full Metal Alchemist, and I don't really want to see Bleach. Heck, I coulda probably downloaded the rest of Stand Alone Complex when someone gave me the first six episodes and I didn't. I think I have some unexplainable aversion to torrenting Anime myself that doesn't kick in when others Torrent it for me. Then again, I have most of Gundam Seed sitting around on CD and I still haven't watched past episode six of that, and I know that's not because I didn't enjoy it.

This Gankutsuou you mention Rago does sound to have an interesting premise. Yet, despite this I sit here and think to myself "Hmm, I could click on that link and maybe go find some torrents... or I could not bother spending all that time and bandwidth that could be better spent on Dawn of War, or Guild Wars, or World of Warcraft, or ..."

See? Anime cannot wrestle me free from video games like it used to, which is why I thought I perhaps "outgrew" it.
