Re:MMO Discussion - 2006/07/10 16:12 I agree that more MMO's, especially ones breaking into the market, should consider following ArenaNet's lead and going for free online play. Personally, I haven't ever found a game that I would consider paying a monthly fee to play -- but I believe in buying a game, and BOOM, done with the whole money issue (how long did it take me to buy FF:CC, due to the requirement of 2 GBA's to play the multi-player? Rest my case ).

I think paying for the software and then getting to interact with millions (hooray for millions now!) for free is the best idea there is. There will be times when I don't get to play for like a week at a time or so, and it's always unexpected -- I would hate to pay a monthly fee only to wind up playing 3 days. And it's not something I can plan for, since sometimes my life gets awful hectic at very random times.

But I know there are people out there who can afford to pay-to-play, and kudos to them. I know there's no possible way for Blizzard to turn WoW into something you don't have to pay for (not with the cost of running all those servers and the updates and everything). I also know ArenaNet would never allow GW to turn into something it wasn't meant to be. I'm not worried about GW (excited for Nightfall!) -- I just hope that NCSoft realizes what it's missing out on, and decides to follow A-Net's example, rather than trying to make yet another pay-to-play game.

And yes, I realize that most of my comments are along the same lines as people who have posted on Photic's site -- think of it as a CliffNotes for those who didn't read the article. ^_^

'Cause that’s what you do.
That's what you do.
