Quick summary of what I'm hitting up in this ramble:
  • Attempt to get myself to do more creative stuff for the site.
  • Changes to the Free Games Challenge.
  • I <3 my Barns & Noble Gift Card

Alright so we're pretty far into January now and I haven't said anything about where the site's going for this year.  I think it's time I share my thoughts on this at least rather than keeping you all in the dark.

In the 7 or so year history of the site enjoyed its greatest readership and support when it hosted a web comic.  Before that when it contained my fan fic works and artwork to go with it.  Ever since 2005 there has been little to nothing in regards to either of those and as a result I've noticed that the Free Games Challenge isn't enough to keep most people around.  I also recall a poll I ran back 2005 asking what kind of things you guys would like to see around here and webcomics and artwork were high among the list (though so was an elusive 'other' that no one explained what they meant by that).
So, rather than poll you guys again for information, something I imagine you're getting sick of, I figured I'd just take action on previous trends and resume work on some sort of creative project around here.  I have not decided what that would be yet, be it a web comic, lots of artwork, or getting back into writing.  That decision is what has taken so long for me to make this announcement. So while I know I want to do something like that around here I have yet to decide what that thing is.

And before I get to it there is the more pressing matter of fixing the broken Crimson Night template.  If I can make up my mind on what I'm going to be adding to the site then I can tailor the new site build to best accommodate that idea.

This moves me along to the FGC.  As much fun as it is, I think in order for me to be able to invest the amount of time needed to do this, I need to free myself from running the Free Games Challenge.  That's not to say that I want to end it - rather I'd like to remove it's structure and make it a much more open to participation thing. In other words, I'd open up a new forum and allow anyone to post a challenge to any game they want so long as completion of the challenge can be proven via a screen capture.  The game may not need to be free, but knowing its not free you should understand that a much smaller group might accept your challenge.  It's a format that I think will work well and will hopefully put off people less when they suggest an game for the FGC to me and I never get around to posting or refuse because I don't think it will work.

That's the thought anyway.  If there are any absolute objections to that model feel free to let me know.  If not I'll get around to implementing it sometime this week.

Finally I was in Barns & Noble last week to pick up a calendar or two when I stopped by its growing manga collection.  Like some sort of repressed childhood desire I felt a strong urge to buy and read some manga because it had been so long since I had.  I was able to fight the urge then and there but I couldn't keep it when the check out dude offered me a year membership that would give me 10% off paperbacks (including manga he said) and a 20% off hardbacks (including D&D rule books he said).  I figured I couldn't lose!  And so after buying a $34 D&D book today and two $10 manga for a total of only $46, I think I have a new friend. ^_^
